CTL/Thompson Provides Certified Testing Services for Magnum Helical Pile Products

October 16, 2007, Fort Collins, COMagnum Piering is believed to be the first helical pier manufacturer to begin testing under the procedures defined in AC358.  “We made the decision soon after AC358 was approved by ICC-ES to move quickly to get our products tested and prepare for our application submission,” said Magnum’s General Manager, Bill Bonekemper.  “The process is expensive and requires a substantial amount of planning and project coordination.  When we learned that CTL/Thompson, a Denver-based engineering and materials testing company, was in the final stages of completing their IAS/ICC-ES certification process, we decided to get the project started in October,” Bonekemper added.

Magnum was a member of Ad Hoc Committee of Helical Foundation Manufacturers that worked closely with ICC-ES to develop AC358.  As one of the six manufacturers on that committee who does not have an ICC legacy report, there is a great deal of incentive to complete the process as quickly as possible in order to compete more aggressively in the marketplace.  Chance/Atlas, MacLean Dixie and Ram Jack are the only manufacturer’s who currently enjoy the benefits associated with having legacy reports

“Dr. Howard Perko and his staff at CTL/Thompson have obviously made a significant investment to put together the necessary testing equipment, personnel and required quality control procedures to become IAS certified for offering this required set of services for helical manufacturers,” Bonekemper said.  “Howard and his engineering staff have a wealth of knowledge with helical piers and deep foundation systems in general.  I don’t imagine there will be too many sole source companies emerging who can do the required laboratory and field testing as required in AC358.  I believe CTL/Thompson will become quite busy in the months and years ahead providing services for other helical manufacturers, so I’m pleased we could put our plan together rapidly to get in the front of the line.  The testing of our products should be completed in November, and we expect to submit our application to ICC-ES shortly thereafter.”
