Billy Mays (the OxyClean guy) pushes helicals on TV

Well, sort of.

Introducing the "Awesome Auger."

It was ony a matter of time until helical technology transfered over into the back yard.  Now, you too can drill holes in your yard with a cordless drill and a mini helical pier.  Although there are no specs given on the website, or in the TV commercial, it appears to be around 6"-8" long, 1/2" diameter, with a 3" helical plate.  It claims to be "patented solid steel."  At first glance there is nothing proprietary about the item other than its ability to attach to a standard drill.

Awesome Auger claims:

  • Penetrate any soil.
  • Dig post holes.
  • Blast trhough hard rock or clay.
  • Cut through thick roots.
  • Remove stubborn stumps.

I'm sure this product is great in flower beds and other softer soil applications, but trying to remove stumps with this thing might be a stretch.  Technically you can remove a stump with a table fork if you have some time on your hands.  Either way, it is a nifty little device that imprints on the minds of the TV watching public, the shape and general use of helical piers.  And if Billy Mays is pushing it, it has to be good right?  That OxyClean stuff really works!
